Describe the Issue or Situation.
Kentuckians have experienced firsthand how natural disasters can occur at any time and often with little warning. Disasters take many forms, and their impact can be felt across most areas of family life. Because there is no “one-size-fits-all” disaster model, planning community outreach can be challenging, and Cooperative Extension is often involved in disaster preparation and response at the local level.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
As a result of local needs, the County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences in Spencer County hosted a workshop for community members about disaster preparation. The focus of this event was on each person being prepared for a possible weather-related disaster with a 3-day supply kit that included essentials such as medication, food, water, financial resources, and protection for their family. Several community partners participated in this event, including the North Central Health Department and Spencer County EMS. Participants were recruited by flyers and posted on websites. Nine participants were involved in the program, located at the Spencer County Extension Office.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
Following the event, participants completed evaluations. Eight of the participants gained a better understanding of the steps they could take in preparation for natural disasters. Eight of the participants increased their understanding of how to find reliable resources on disaster preparation and/or response. Further, eight of the participants can better identify what items they should include in a disaster kit. Most importantly, nine of the participants reported that they intended to assemble a disaster kit tailored to their needs, and all nine participants shared that they intended to create a disaster response plan.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
Participants specifically shared that the most significant things they learned from the event were not to take anything for granted, to ensure they are prepared by having a 3-day supply kit for possible evacuations, and to possibly apply for assistance if a disaster were to happen through the list provided.
