The face of agriculture is changing event in Barren County, one of Kentucky’s most prolific agriculture counties. An event to honor the rich tradition of production agriculture was needs, but fewer and fewer Barren County citizens have the direct contact with the farm. As folks loose direct contact with farm life, they understand the real story of farm to fork. The Barren County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Glasgow Barren County Chamber of Commerce to host the Barren County Farm, Home, & Garden Expo. The two day event held at the National Guard Armory saw over 1400 Barren County citizens pass through. The Barren County Cooperative Extension Service was set up in order to educate folks about Extension and how we can be a part of their life. Master Gardeners helped with the decorations and provide an introduction to gardening for children. Local celebrities prepare some of their favorite recipes featuring locally grown foods. These demonstrations were facilitated by the interim FCS agent. Local farm families were recognized for accomplishments. The event was designed to be family friendly, and included local food favorites such as Tator’s BBQ and Chaney’s Ice Cream. Numerous local businesses came into to showcase their services. Sponsors and vendors were survived at the end, changes are planned, but the event will be an annual event. The 2018 event raised over $6000 for youth leadership and educational programs sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and assisted with by Barren County Cooperative Extension.
