Plant Camp – A Collaboration between 4-H and Horticulture

Author: Delia Scott

Planning Unit: Woodford County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Developing Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Five students ranging in age from 9 - 12 participated in a two-day Plant Camp in June at the Woodford County Extension Office. The Plant Camp was a collaborative effort with the Extension Agent for Horticulture, the Extension Agent for 4-H, and the Woodford County Extension Master Gardeners.

The theme for Plant Camp 2025 was Native Pollinators, with an emphasis on symbiotic relationships where both insects and plants benefit (mutualism). Plant Camp attendees watched a pollinator presentation, played a pollinator matching game, drew and described their ideal pollinator in nature journals, observed pollinators on native flowers and plants, learned about pollinators and other insects native to Kentucky, and went on a field trip that included a pollinator field walk. Participants reported learning about the importance of pollination for food crops, gaining a deeper understanding of insect families, and how flower shape influences pollination.
