Plan of Work: Decreasing Obesity Though Education on Healthy Nutrition
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
According to most recent county healthcare profiles and health facts for Fleming County, 68% adults are obese, 38% report a lack of personal physical activity, 14% adults have diabetes. In an effort to increase awareness and improve individual wellness, the Fleming County Extension Service Family and Consumer Science program conducted a 10 week series of Weight- the Reality Series. The ten week program taught participants how to make healthy food choices and to explore various physical activities. Participants met once per week to have a nutritional lesson, with a healthy recipe demonstrated and sampled. The meeting concluded with a brief physical activity lesson. Over the ten weeks, the group lost a combined total of 11 pounds. At the conclusion of the program all participants felt more effective in managing their weight. Also 65% claimed that moderate physical activity was now a part of their daily routine. Eighty percent reported monitoring their weight on a regular basis due to participating in the program. In an effort to continue to provide a supportive environment, a follow up program will be held in the fall.
