A priority identified by the Boone County Horticulture Advisory Council was providing gardening opportunities for individuals with special needs. One of the most effective methods to achieve this goal is adapting the garden to the individual.
Working with the Toyota Warehouse facility Terra group adaptable raised beds were constructed. The Terra group is made up of Toyota employees. Toyota management encourages their employees to volunteer in their communities.
Plans for the raised beds were researched and funding was provided by the Boone County District Board. Toyota provided the skilled labor and tools necessary for construction. !7 employees and clientele attended the "Build Event"
The District Board has requested the beds be clustered in a garden like setting that is wheelchair accessible, and highly visible. We will be including signage in the future, They also wanted them close to our Farmers Market.
The beds will be planted with annuals, vegetables fruit and ornamentals. The intention is for the beds to serve as models for individuals, hospitals, schools, retirement communities and institutions who have need for this type of garden. Plans will be available for bed replication.
