Major Program: First Impressions

Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford Research Center indicates that 85 percent of job success comes from having well-developed soft and people skills, and only 15 percent of job success comes from technical skills and knowledge (hard skills). Employers are often prepared to teach technical job skills; however, the intangible skills of being a team player, time management, and positive attitude are difficult to teach on-site but are critical to success. Some of these skills are often desired by families and youth to help prepare for professional events, workforce, or experiences where manners are important and valuable.

To address this need, Maranda Brooks, FCS agent Fayette County, Hannah Thornsberry FCS agent Woodford County and Sara Haag of Jessamine County worked collaboratively to deliver a successful two-day tea party and etiquette series held May 9th and May 10th.  During the evening of May 9th,  Hannah Sara and Maranda prepared pastry prep activity from Pies and Pastry training. After pastry prep Maranda prepped and delivered table etiquette publication material, an interactive place-setting activity and delivered an interactive dining etiquette talk and dialogue to address commonly asked etiquette questions. Saturday May 10th return include baking the pastries prep, having tea and a time of reflection over all skills learned.

Between the two events, Maranda, Hannah, and Sara successfully provided table and dining etiquette for 6 participants. 15% of attendees were youth age. Evaluation results indicated that, collected over the two events, 95% of attendees plan to practice dining etiquette protocols, 95% expressed appreciation for learning how to make an alternate healthier version of a tart pastry and 95% of attendees plan to use dining etiquette to create positive impressions.
