Invasive Species Education and Management

Author: DJ Scully

Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Forest Education: Health, Management, and Utilization

Plan of Work: Environmental Management - Environmental Awareness, Education, and Action

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Campbell County Extension Environmental Advisory Council identified invasive species and their management as a top priority educational issue at their meeting on 11/26/24. Sixteen members participated. DJ Scully, Campbell County Extension Agent for Natural Resources and Environmental Management supports the City of Fort Thomas and the Fort Thomas Forest Conservancy by participating in their annual Earth Day Celebration (the largest Earth Day event in northern Kentucky). This year’s event took place on Saturday, 4/27/25, at Tower Park. This event provided an excellent opportunity to educate participants about KY’s invasive plants, their management, and alternative native species. 250 people received “Field Guide to Kentucky’s Invasive Plants, Extension Publication FOR-177.”  The Extension Agent provided native, wildflower seed packets to those that picked up the publication so that they could establish native plants where they removed invasives from their property. The agent engages with several dozen landowners annually through property visits to identify and manage invasive plants. In June, the Ft. Thomas Forest Conservancy and the City of Fort Thomas reached out for more information about correct pesticide licensing for volunteers and workers to get a hold better yet on invasive species in town.
