Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 4-H Cloverbud program is designed to be noncompetitive, educational, activity-based, cooperative learning centered, safe, developmentally age appropriate, and success-oriented. By allowing children between the ages of 5-8 to participate in a positive learning experiences it helps them to build life skills at a younger age. The Henry County Cooperative Extension Service is now offering an afterschool Cloverbud Club.

Two high school seniors approached the local agent in allowing them to be teen leaders of an afterschool club. Both of the young ladies had been involved in 4-H in the past and now wanted to give back to younger 4-Her’s. After talking with teens of potential programming needs they became excited at the prospect of beginning a Cloverbud Club. Each month they planned meetings in which there were four components consisting of: education, nutrition, hands-on craft, and physical activity.

The teens were overwhelmed with the response of the new club with averaging over 20 participants each month. Following the first meeting they recruited high school friends to assist during meetings. While some of the participants were younger siblings of 4-H’ers many were new to the program.

Parents and Cloverbuds were complimentary of the life skills and hands-on learning opportunities provided by the teen leaders. Young members said they couldn’t wait to come to the meetings and that their teen leaders were fun. The Cloverbud Club has been a huge success. Teens are developing leadership skills for their future, while members are developing life skills all while having fun.
