Master Gardeners Program Launched in Letcher County

Author: Shad Baker

Planning Unit: Letcher County CES

Major Program: Master Gardener

Plan of Work: AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Letcher County Extension Office recently completed the first half of its Kentucky Master Gardener training, welcoming 25 eager learners from across the county into the program. Over 11 classes, participants gained practical skills in basic botany, plant identification, propagation, soils and fertility, plant diseases, insects, and weed management. Hands-on activities paired with classroom instruction allowed participants to gain confidence in diagnosing plant problems and selecting appropriate management practices for home and community gardens.

Participants shared how they have already begun applying what they learned, from identifying leaf spots on their tomatoes to building better compost piles and soil health at home. Many have expressed excitement about using these skills to help neighbors and community gardens thrive. The second half of the Master Gardener training will continue in the fall, and upon completion, these participants will be certified Kentucky Master Gardeners, ready to share their knowledge to improve local food systems, support pollinators, and beautify spaces across Letcher County.
