Hooked on Nature 4-H Day Camp

Author: Cathy Sparks

Planning Unit: Magoffin County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Environmental and Natural Resources Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Many children in Magoffin County cannot afford to attend a week of 4-H camp or are too young to attend. The decision was made to offer a 4-H Day camp to allow those students an opportunity to attend an educational and fun day camp.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

We partnered with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Kentucky Reptile Museum, and the Kentucky Ag Bus to provide programming for the day camp. Children were given the opportunity to learn how to tie a fish hook on a line, how to cast and reel and fishing pole, to learn all about Kentucky native reptiles, and about how soybeans are started and how they grow by making a living necklace.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

We had 130 children from K-6th grades who attended the program. Several parents also volunteered their time to assist with the programming, classes, and serving lunch each day.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

The children who attended were very well behaved and were eager to learn from their classes each day. The parents and grandparents who attended and assisted with the day camp said that it was the most impressive 4-H Day Camp that they had ever attended with their children. The children were given the opportunity to evaluate their participation by a show of hands after each class. This gave us an opportunity for feed back. Over 75% of those in attendance shared that they had experienced or learned something that they had never attempted before.  There were several special needs children that attended the day camp, and children from all socio-economic backgrounds.  There were four Hispanic  children and one African American child in attendance also.
