Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Webster County FCS Agent implemented Truth & Consequences: The Choice is Yours, a scenario based role-play activity designed to help students learn more about the physical, legal, financial, and emotional consequences of substance abuse and cyber-crimes. This program is provided to 8th grade students at the Webster County Middle School. Community partners, Family, District, and Circuit Court Judges and court officials participated in the event as volunteers.
There were 176 participating students in the Truth and Consequences Program. The participants start at the Middle School where they witness a real life drug related scenario put on by 5 members of the high school YES Youth Council. The groups are then bussed to the Webster County Courthouse in Dixon to visit the Circuit, District, and Family court rooms to be called before each judge and hear the Truth and Consequences Scenario assigned to them. Recently, with parent permission, they are also able to see the lobby of the Webster County Jail. This has been an eye opening experience for most of the students, with several expressing that they'd never seen a court room or jail and hoped to never be back.
The event continues to make an impact on students each year by providing them with a first-hand look at the realities and consequences of getting involved with substance abuse and cyber-crimes.
