Dairy Programing at the Barn

Author: Tyler Miller

Planning Unit: Lincoln County CES

Major Program: Dairy

Plan of Work: Agriculture Sustainability and Marketing 2020-25

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

I promoted Dairy Gauge, which is a program that focuses on dairy operations and there financial situation. After promoting the program to several diary farms in the county, i had one farm interested in participating. I worked with two specialist on campus and we all found a time to visit the dairy farm.

We had a great meeting and was able to shed some light for the operations financial situation. After about and hour and a half of paperwork and questions answered, a preliminary report was printed and given to the owners of the farm. this report showed information like cash flow, debt per cow, feed cost, ect, ect.

This type of report really helps the producer to see limitations and areas needed for improvement in the operation. In many cases, it opens the eyes of the producer in financial areas of the operation they may think isn't a concern. It helps them to plan accordingly, and to make sounds operating decisions for the future.

This may just have affected one dairy farm but the impact is large. The owners are able to see instantly what needs attention and what doesn't. This report will have year over year impacts that will be hard to calculate based on the management decisions of the farm but the impact will be long lasting and it will be helpful for years to come.
