Beef Cattle Chute Side Pregnancy Testing
Author: Colby Guffey
Planning Unit: Clinton County CES
Major Program: Animal Production and Management
Plan of Work: Strengthening Farms, Food and Families
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Beef cattle producers often struggle to find veterinarians to perform pregnancy diagnosis on the cow herd. In recent years technology has become available for producers to do their own pregnancy determinations on the cow herd using whole blood or blood serum samples. Few producers know of the availability of the chute side blood pregnancy test kits.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
A demonstration was set up at a local cooperating producer farm to show beef producers the techniques of collecting blood samples from cows. The blood samples collected were then put into chute side pregnancy test strips to determine positive or negative results on the spot.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
7 local producers attended the demonstration with more demonstrations planned for the fall.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact.
Beef producers at the demonstration have indicated how simple and effective the techniques are for beef cattle pregnancy testing using blood samples. The producers have stated they will utilize this technology in their operations to make decisions on culling non-productive animals from the herd.
Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
