When Mammoth Cave Area Family and Consumer Sciences Agents taught a jewelry-making class this summer, participants expected to leave with a handmade necklace or bracelet. What they didn’t expect was how much they would gain beyond the beads and wire. Two Allen County Homemakers have decided to utilize the skills they learned and create jewelry to auction off for charities within the community. By providing skills training and access to local or recycled materials, individuals can create and sell handmade jewelry to generate income. Another Allen County homemaker is using her skills to enter a bracelet into the Allen County Cultural Arts Contest. This homemaker has never participated in cultural arts. She has been a homemaker for 20 years in Allen County.
Data collected from the Allen County homemakers stated that content was educational and easy to follow. Other surveys collected stated that homemakers feel confident in teaching peers how make jewelry and completing a project for themselves.
