Teaching Neighbors, Strengthening Communities: The Power of KYNEP Storytelling

Across Kentucky, our Nutrition Education Program (KYNEP) educators are the “boots on the ground” empowering their neighbors to make the most of the food they have. Through short, engaging videos, we’re sharing their authentic voices and real-life classes and learning opportunities—from schools and community centers to farmers markets and local events across the state.

These storytelling videos put a spotlight on the everyday heroes teaching practical skills, like healthy cooking, budgeting, and smart food choices. Each peer educator helps participants do the best they can with what’s on hand—making healthy eating more accessible and achievable for all Kentuckians.

Already, these videos have reached hundreds on social media, with the potential to engage thousands more. By showcasing these authentic, local stories, we’re strengthening trust, building awareness of available resources, and celebrating the incredible work of our nutrition educators/program assistants.

Statewide Impact Snapshot:

  • In a typical year, Kentucky SNAP-Ed reaches over 50,000 participants through classes, events, and outreach.
  • Educators deliver thousands of lessons in schools, community centers, farmers markets, and local events.
  • Evaluations show participants report increased fruit and vegetable consumption, improved food budgeting skills, and greater confidence in preparing healthy meals.
  • SNAP-Ed supports over 120 county-based educators and nutrition assistants working directly in their communities.

Why It Matters:
Food access is more than availability—it’s knowing how to use what you have. By telling these stories, we’re showing Kentuckians that help is local, practical, and relatable. Our educators don’t just teach nutrition—they build relationships, reduce stigma, and help people feed their families well, even on tight budgets.
