Successful Homesteading Series

Author: Chelsea Sapp

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - ANR

Plan of Work: Core Program Area: Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Marion County has seen an increase since COVID-19 pandemic in the number of individuals and households that want to homestead. People are interested in eating healthier, cleaner and growing / doing most of the work themselves. This series focused on six areas of homesteading consisting of: bread making, goat soap making, cleaning products, growing your own vegetables and canning, beekeeping and small ruminant farming.

This program reached 60 people total ranging from high school to middle aged adults. To host this series, I worked with our FCS agent, local beekeepers group and local small farmer.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. This program has impacted several interested in homesteading to start small and begin to implement homesteading and self- efficient practices in their life. The participants gained valuable resources and learned new skills to help them succeed. As result of the bread making class, two participants made more homemade bread and expanded into learning how to make sourdough bread.
