Supporting New Mothers: The Return of the World's Greatest Baby Shower in Christian County

Author: Tiffany Bolinger

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Family Development General

Plan of Work: Inspiring the adoption of healthy lifestyle choices to improve overall well-being.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

After a multi-year hiatus, the World’s Greatest Baby Shower made a powerful comeback in Christian County thanks to the leadership of the Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Agent and a coalition of dedicated community partners. The event welcomed 49 participants, including expectant and new mothers along with their guests, for a day centered around education, empowerment, and support.

The event featured a community resource fair, an engaging seminar from a UK Extension Nutrition Specialist, and an interactive ask-the-expert panel, offering attendees valuable information on nutrition, parenting, and local services.

One of the standout successes of the event was a new collaboration between the FCS Agent and a Master Clothing Volunteer (MCV). Recognizing the needs of nursing mothers, the MCV hand-sewed and donated over 25 nursing covers as a special giveaway. The impact was immediate and profound—every cover was claimed within minutes, and many mothers began using them on-site during the seminar and resource fair.

This heartfelt gesture not only provided a practical tool for breastfeeding mothers but also served as a visible show of support for infant health and maternal well-being. The overwhelmingly positive response caught statewide attention. As a result, the MCV has been invited to teach a sewing lesson to other MCVs across Kentucky, equipping them to replicate this meaningful giveaway in community baby showers across other counties.

The return of the World’s Greatest Baby Shower was more than just an event—it was a celebration of partnership, education, and the strong community support system that surrounds new families in Christian County, with ripple effects now reaching across the state.
