Success StoryPrivate Pesticide Applicator Training

Private Pesticide Applicator Training

Author: Kelsey Marcum

Planning Unit: Casey County CES

Major Program: Chemical Management

Plan of Work: Farm and Environmental Sustainability

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation:

Safe and effective pesticide application is essential for protecting human health, the environment, and crop profitability. Many producers need updated training to ensure compliance with pesticide regulations and to adopt best management practices that reduce drift, protect pollinators, and minimize environmental contamination.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable):

To address this need, I teach Private Pesticide Applicator Training which is designed by UK specialists to educate producers on current label requirements, personal protective equipment, integrated pest management, and proper pesticide handling and disposal. The program offers resources and guidelines, ensuring producers received the necessary education to renew their private applicator licenses and apply pesticides safely on their operations.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience:

The training was attended by 34 local producers, including beef and dairy cattle farmers, crop and forage producers, and vegetable growers, who rely on pesticides as a tool to protect their crops and livestock from pests while maintaining stewardship of their land.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact:

Following the training, participants reported an increase in their knowledge of safe pesticide handling and application practices. Additionally, they intend to adopt at least one best management practice learned during the training, such as calibrating sprayers properly or using enhanced personal protective equipment during application. As a result of this program, 34 producers are now equipped with the knowledge and certification needed to safely and legally apply pesticides, contributing to safer food production, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance within the community.
