Hot Weather Management in Poultry Houses

Author: Gregory Comer

Planning Unit: Ohio County CES

Major Program: Poultry/Small Flocks

Plan of Work: Crops & Livestock Management & Marketing; Horticulture & Forestry Production, Economics & Marketing

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Ohio Co. ranks 4th in poultry and egg production in Kentucky, contributing over $93 million dollars in farm gate receipts. Heat stress in poultry is a serious problem for the poultry industry. Often resulting in productivity losses – which can include decreased body weight, reduced feed intake, lower breast muscle yield, decreased meat quality, increases in mortality and many other responses. Fortunately, broiler house designs have improved greatly to meet the requirements of the modern broiler producer. However, management of these houses is complex and a lack of understanding of basic environmental management can have a negative influence on poultry performance and profitability of the operation.

The ANR Agents in McLean, Grayson & Ohio County hosted Mr. Michael Czarick, Extension Engineer /University of Georgia for a workshop to discuss “Hot Weather Management in Poultry Houses”, at the Ohio Co. Extension Office. Mr. Czarick discussed proper ventilation management, sizing of fans and how to manage poultry house ventilation in hot weather. 49 producers and industry partners attended the workshop. Agents also made multiple on-farm visits, with Mr. Czarick, to observe & evaluate ventilation in producer’s houses. One of the unique aspects of the program was the use of infrared cameras to identify heat spots and poorly insulated areas in poultry houses. These cameras allowed producers to visualize energy inefficiencies, which in turn helped them address issues related to temperature control and overall poultry health.

In addition to providing valuable educational content, the program has fostered stronger relationships between producers, Extension agents, and industry professionals. It has also helped participants make informed decisions regarding their poultry house operations.
