In 2024 a needs assessment conducted by the University of Kentucky revealed that many people across our state and counties are looking for ways to improve their mental health and over wellbeing. To address the need, the Wilderness Trail Area Family and Consumer Science Agents from 8 counties (Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley) hosted a needlepoint seminar to offer activities to elevate daily stress and outlets to express themselves. Leaders and Agents taught classes on crochet, cross stitch, diamond art, quilting, English paper piecing, red work and embroidery.

42 homemakers from ages 25 to 80 participated in the hands-on classes. A written evaluation resulted in :

95 % of individuals stated that by taking the class, they learned techniques to relieve stress.

90% reported that by taking the workshops, they found a new way to express their creativity.

100% communicated that after today’s classes, their skill level was improved.

One participant commented, “I am glad I took this class. I learned new and easier methods in needlepoint.”
