Strengthening Forestry Practices Through the Kentucky Master Logger Program in Magoffin County

Author: Kristen Stumbo

Planning Unit: Magoffin County CES

Major Program: Forest Education: Health, Management, and Utilization

Plan of Work: Protecting, Preserving, and Promoting our Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Logging is a key economic driver in Eastern Kentucky, but it also presents serious safety, environmental, and regulatory challenges. Many loggers and landowners lack access to formal training that equips them with the knowledge and skills to operate safely, sustainably, and in compliance with state laws. The Kentucky Master Logger Program was developed to address these needs through comprehensive, accessible education.

To meet the growing demand for certified training in the region, the Magoffin County Extension Office hosted a 3-day Kentucky Master Logger Program on May 6–8, 2025. The program was coordinated by ANR/4-H Extension Agent Kristen Stumbo in partnership with the University of Kentucky Department of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Kentucky Division of Forestry.. The training included classroom instruction and field-based learning on topics such as water quality laws, OSHA regulations, timber trespass, best management practices (BMPs), chainsaw safety, and directional felling.

The program welcomed  31 participants  from across Eastern Kentucky, including:

- Professional loggers seeking initial certification or recertification.

- Private landowners managing timber resources.

- Individuals entering the forestry and logging workforce.

Participants engaged in interactive sessions and hands-on demonstrations designed to reinforce safe, legal, and environmentally responsible logging practices.

Several participants shared that the training helped them better understand how to reduce erosion and protect water quality during timber harvests. All attendees successfully completed the course and received their official Kentucky Master Logger certification, a legal requirement for commercial timber harvesting in the state. By equipping local loggers with essential knowledge and skills, the program supports safer operations, healthier forests, and stronger rural economies throughout Eastern Kentucky.
