Trail Town Taskforce Moving Forward

Author: Gregory Comer

Planning Unit: Ohio County CES

Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Decision-Making; Physical Activity; Nutrition; Substance Abuse; Safety; Securing Financial Stability

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 2012 Green River Community Health Assessment, for Ohio County, showed 41% of Ohio Countians’ reported no consistent physical activity or exercise. In addition, 30% of adults are obese, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.

The Trail Town Taskforce, formed in 2014, was established with the goals of creating a county-wide network of certified land and water Trail Towns. The Trail Towns will consist of hiking, cycling, horseback riding, kayak and canoe trails. These trails will begin and end at various communities and towns across the county. With the goal of the trails being certified by the Ky Trail Towns.

The Trail Town Taskforce is a unique partnership with city governments, Ky Adventure Tourism, Ohio Co. Extension Service, O.C. Monitor, Ohio Co. Fiscal Court, Green River District Health Department, Ohio Co. Hospital, Ohio Co. Parks, Ohio Co. Health Coalition, and the Ohio Co. Board of Education.

The current highlights over the past year are:

  • The Ohio Co. Trail Town taskforce has begun to create a blue water trail on the Rough River, beginning at the northern part of the county and ending past Hartford. Currently, they have installed kayak/canoe accesses and built a primitive campground, outside of Hartford, with the aid of the City of Hartford and the Muhlenberg Job Corp.
  • A facebook page has been created, promoting the Trail Town Taskforce’s activities.
  • The Hartford Tail Town Taskforce has been accepted by the National Parks Service/Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program. This is aid in improving the groups vision and provide technical assistance, when needed in developing trails.
  • Local groups have aided in identifying community resources, recognizing potential trail linkages, and assisted in developing a sustainability plan for the future.
