Success StoryHow to Start a Food Business WATCH PARTY

How to Start a Food Business WATCH PARTY

Author: Von Barnes

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Economic and Business Development - ANR

Plan of Work: Educating & Empowering Individuals and Families to Make Responsible Choices and Develop Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Office on Gardiner View buzzed with energy as a group of enthusiastic individuals gathered for a watch party focused on "How to Start a Food Business." This wasn't just about passively watching regional food presentations; it was an opportunity for local aspiring food entrepreneurs to connect, learn, and get support tailored to the Kentucky food landscape regarding policies and processes for getting started producing goods for market.

Despite being a focused group, the watch party, hosted by Kentucky State University (KSU) county agent Von Barnes and University of Kentucky (UK) state agent Bethany Pratt, fostered lively discussions that showed a strong desire for knowledge within the community. Attendees arrived with a diverse range of interests, from mastering the art of crafting homemade jams and fiery hot sauces under home processing regulations to envisioning the launch of mobile food trucks and establishing operations within commercial kitchens. The desire to understand the entire spectrum of launching a food business, from initial concept to full-scale operation, was evident.

Adding to the richness of the event, David Nichter of the Jefferson Water & Soil Conservation shared, "It was a great showing and I learned a lot from the presentations."

One particularly insightful moment came from the Kentucky Farm Bureau representative, who highlighted the possibility of incorporating food business insurance into an existing farm business policy – a valuable piece of information for many in the region.

The watch party was a proactive approach for networking opportunities and created a supportive and collaborative environment.

This successful event underscores the vital role of the extension in nurturing local food entrepreneurship. By providing not just access to valuable information but also a platform for local connection and tailored support, they are empowering residents to turn their culinary passions into thriving businesses.
