Basics of Sourdough

The popularity of sourdough bread has been growing recently. People want to learn to make their own Sourdough bread due to its unique flavor, texture, and potential health benefits.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent in Daviess County, partnered with the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent in Hancock County to offer two Basics of Sourdough Class. Total participation was forty-four people.

The target audience for the Basics of Sourdough were adults who were interested in learning more about sourdough, the health benefits of it, and baking with it.

The participants learned about sourdough, how to start it, use it, use the discard, store it and so much more. Each participant left the workshop with one cup of starter, directions for specifically feeding the starter, and recipes to make with the starter. They were able to taste sourdough bread, and cookie samples. Participants were amazed at the versatility of sourdough. Eighty percent of participants have used the starter from the workshop to make bread or other item using recipes given at the workshop. Eighty percent of participants use the discard to make baked goods. 30% of participants bake bread or other items once or twice a week. 100% of participants said they shared information about sourdough with friends or family. Ten percent of participants said they gave a starter to friends.

Information was taken from a follow-up survey 4 months after the workshop. Participants have shared stories of their baking and information such as what they bake.
