According the U.S. Census, approximately 54 percent of the Boone County population is between the ages of 18 and 65 and about 13 percent is age 65 or older. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout life is important, but even more so the older we get. Healthier adults generally require fewer medical services and may live independently longer. Educational programming to address common aging questions and issues has been requested and supported by the Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Committee members.

“Mastery of Living Well,” a five-week series was conducted by the Boone County Cooperative Extension Service and focused on those ages 50 or older. The series curriculum from Oregon State University Extension provided information on memory difficulties, depression, medications, food and nutrition, and physical activity and exercise issues. Seventeen individuals, ranging in age from the early 50s to the late 60s, took part in the program. Each session featured an instructional video, a group discussion, and a goal setting exercise. 

Verbal assessments were completed in sessions two through five to determine knowledge retained from the previous session and whether or not personal goals had been a focus during the previous weeks. 

A written evaluation completed by nine participants at the end of the five-week session revealed six (67 percent) had changed their medication practices. They reported not taking medications with milk, separating their intake of over-the-counter and prescription medications, and working to ensure they are taking them as directed. Four of the nine (44 percent) reported increased physical activity and three said they were more focused on their food intake including no longer consuming “junk food.” 

One individual shared they learned that some forgetfulness is normal and that they have worked to stop worrying so much about how aging has and will affect them. 

Learning to live and age well, and adopt healthier behaviors is positive at any age or stage of life.
