Success Story4-H Summer Camp

4-H Summer Camp

Author: Bridgett Poteet

Planning Unit: Edmonson County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

On June 10-13, the agents from the Edmonson County Extension office embarked for the West Kentucky 4-H Camp grounds to meet with 4 other counties for several days of fun-filled activities, games, and opportunities to learn new skills.

From Edmonson County there were 67 youth, 17 teens, 10 adults, and 2 agents that attended camp.

Last year, Edmonson County brought 76 campers/teens and 8 adults to camp. Keeping the streak alive, this was the fourth year in a row for Edmonson County to set a camp attendance record for our county.

We camped with over 294 youth and adults from Daviess, McLean, Meade, and Union counties. Edmonson County camping group made up 33% of the total camp attendance for the week.

Camp staff really went the extra mile this year to provide a multitude of activities for our campers! Campers were able to pick classes from archery, riflery, crafts, community service, board games, old-fashion games, hunter's orange card certification, disc golf, hammocks, boating, fishing, outdoor and indoor cooking, zip-lining, photography, and many more! Not to mention the daily recreation activities, swimming, karaoke, and camp favorite GaGa ball! Each night ended with specialized activities from Mega Relay, Wet-n-Wild Water Night, and Glo Sally.

Our 4-H Council and District Board went above and beyond for all of our campers.  The 4-H Council provided goody bags with snacks and a ticket for a free popcorn/snow cone, water and electrolyte drinks in the cabins, and all the supplies for the craft class in honor of Susie Vincent.  Our district board provided funding half the camp fee for all youth age campers.

Our campers also were able to participate in 5 different fundraisers from January-May to help pay for the cost of camp.  Those 5 fundraisers brought in $800 in income to go towards their own camp fee. The Edmonson County Homemakers held 2 bake sales to provide $320 in scholarship funds to award to 2 campers who have a financial hardship.  Not only that but community members and sponsors rallied around making camp attainable for every youth interested in going.  There were $3000 worth of sponsorship funds to go towards scholarships, camp expenses, transportation, etc.

We hope our campers came home with lots of news skills, fantastic stories, and ready to go back to camp next year!
