Crop Pest Management Webinars Series by UK-REC Specilaists Gain Loyal Audience

Author: Raul Villanueva

Planning Unit: Entomology

Major Program: Grains

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

This webinar series focuses on the management of insects, diseases, and weeds in field crops. Extension specialists from the UK Research and Education Center (UK-REC) in Princeton delivered weekly presentations on topics such as managing stink bugs in soybeans, maximizing disease control and return on investment from corn fungicides, improving herbicide applications, and managing key wheat diseases in Kentucky.

The four-week series, held in October and November 2024, was designed to provide stakeholders with research-based information. Presentations were delivered by Dr. Raul Villanueva, Dr. Kiersten Wise, Dr. Carl Bradley, and Dr. Travis Legleiter. The series was organized by UK-REC Extension Associate Jason Travis and hosted through the Southern Integrated Pest Management Center.

The webinars drew over 120 total attendees, with many individuals participating in multiple sessions. Several local agricultural businesses and Extension offices hosted group viewing sessions for those without reliable internet access, allowing participants to engage with colleagues from across the agriculture industry.

Webinar participation offered Certified Crop Advisor continuing education credits, County Agent in-service training, and pesticide applicator training. Feedback from participants highlighted appreciation for the series’ in-depth analysis of integrated pest management (IPM) topics and the relevance of selected subjects to current agricultural issues. Many attendees had participated in previous years, and the series has become a much-anticipated annual event.
