Marshall County 4-Hers Stuck in the Middle

Author: Lena Mallory

Planning Unit: Marshall County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Stuck in the Middle at West Kentucky 4-H Camp is a unique and impactful event designed specifically for middle school youth (6th-8th grade). This event was a success, bringing together young people from 13 counties in Western Kentucky for a weekend of fun, friendship, and growth. Marshall County was represented by four first-time youth participants and one adult volunteer.   They were thankful for the opportunity provided by the WKY Extension professionals and teen/adult volunteers.

Social connections drive positive outcomes

One of the most powerful outcomes of the event was how it fostered friendships and belonging. According to post-event survey data, 90% of youth reported making a new friend.  Marshall County delegates when asked by their 4-H Youth Development Agent also noted they made new friends from different counties.  These experiences develop social and emotional competencies that support overall well-being and future academic success.

Hands-on learning and leadership at camp

Youth thrived in the interactive and engaging format of Stuck in the Middle. Camp activities were described as fun, valuable, and enriching, with many participants noting the hands-on elements as highlights.  Marshall County’s delegates reported enjoying the Leadership Class; doing string art/embroidery; learning about horses; making smores during Sally Down the Alley time; and the group challenges.  The weekend’s structure encouraged teamwork, communication, and leadership development, offering middle school youth the opportunity to practice real-life skills in a safe, supervised setting.

Marshall County’s Adult Volunteer taught the Paper Rockets Workshop.  She reached 13 youth in this hands-on STEM lesson.  It needs to be pointed out the leader had not taught the workshop before and worked with the County 4-HYD Agent to be trained/prepared to teach.  The adult volunteer was thrilled to pass along what she had to learn herself and excited to offer the workshop in the future.

Creating a space where youth thrive

Youth reported that they appreciated the chance to try new things, meet new people, and enjoy the outdoors in a supportive environment. One Marshall County delegate noted she went WAY out of her comfort zone to make new friends and even socialized with the older (aka 7th & 8th grade) gals in her cabin. This was a confidence booster for this young lady.   Another Marshall County delegate who tends to really keep to herself noted the people were kind and nice.  Many youths emphasized how welcomed and included they felt.

The 4-H Thriving Model in action

Stuck in the Middle aligns strongly with the 4-H Youth Development Thriving Model, providing high-quality programming, opportunities for leadership, and meaningful relationships with caring adults. These conditions help middle school youth build competence, confidence, character, connection, and caring—the 5 C’s of positive youth development.

Stuck in the Middle looks to be a model for positive youth development, helping young people build lifelong skills, make meaningful friendships, and prepare for bright futures through the power of 4-H.  The Marshall County delegation is already excited about next year’s event
