The Community Service Project took place on June 20, 2025. The goal was to clean up as much as possible in this 10-mile trash cleanup on HWY 23 to US 119 with the Junior Teen, Teen Club, and Cloverbud Members of Letcher County. The youngest member that contributed their time was 7 and the oldest volunteer to contribute their time was 68. This collaboration of youth and volunteers was amazing. 8 youth and 31 volunteers made this community service project happen!

The specific areas that need cleaning were the roadways and ditch lines. Picking up the litter helped to reduce waterway pollution from the ditch lines that flow to the streams and creeks. The goal was to clean up the roadsides in Letcher County on one of the busiest stretches of roadway through the county. Through this community service project, the club members learned things about raising environmental awareness, not only in Letcher County but in our country and our world. We spoke about beautification and how we want to make our county look nice and neat and the reasons that we plant pollinator plots in the county and how the littler that will never disintegrate such as the plastic destroys all the hard work but in on the flower plots on the roadsides. The amount of trash that was collected and picked up was (40) 13-gallon trash bags.

4-Hers gathered supplies they obtained the necessary supplies like trash bags, gloves, and trash grabbers. Volunteers and 4-Hers arranged for debris removal, by coordinating with the county extension office allowing the use of the office dumpster.

Each of the youth were assigned tasks to volunteers and ensure safety measures are in place.

This community service project involving trash pickup was a rewarding endeavor with numerous benefits for the environment and the community. By organizing or participating in this event, individuals made a tangible difference in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant Letcher County.
