Success StoryGarrard County Beekeepers Association’s Growth and Training Impact

Garrard County Beekeepers Association’s Growth and Training Impact

Author: Casey Byrd

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Beekeeping

Plan of Work: Improving Agricultural Income

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Overview:
The Garrard County Beekeepers Association has seen impressive growth and engagement within the community, thanks to the active involvement of local beekeepers and their collaborative efforts with the University of Kentucky Extension. The Garrard Beekeeper Association has successfully fostered a community of passionate beekeepers who actively share knowledge and resources, creating an engaged, informed network for beekeeping enthusiasts in the region, while allowing farmers to supplement farm sales with fresh-local honey.

One of the most notable milestones for the Association came through a hands-on training session centered around the University of Kentucky Extension-owned Honey Extractor. This training was hosted to help local beekeepers better manage the honey harvest from their personal hives, while training individuals on the proper, use, care, and maintenance of this expensive piece of equipment. While only 18 individuals attended the training session, the impact was substantial.

Growth of the Association:
Since its inception, the Garrard County Beekeepers Association has consistently expanded, with membership soaring to 147 active members on social media platforms. This growth has been fueled by the power of social media, where members regularly share advice, tips, and updates on beekeeping best practices. The platform has become a hub for local beekeepers to connect, ask questions, and exchange resources.

Training on the UK Extension Honey Extractor:
Recognizing the importance of proper honey extraction techniques, the Garrard County Beekeepers Association worked in partnership with the University of Kentucky Extension to offer a hands-on training session on the UK Extension Honey Extractor. While this session attracted 18 dedicated beekeepers, it marked a pivotal moment in the region’s beekeeping community.

The training session not only educated attendees on how to operate the honey extractor efficiently but also emphasized the value of properly harvesting honey for both quality and sustainability. The hands-on experience allowed the participants to understand the finer details of the equipment, giving them confidence when using the Extension-owned honey extractor for their own hives.

Access to the Honey Extractor:
A key takeaway from the training was the extension of an incredible resource: the opportunity to "check-out" the UK Extension Honey Extractor for personal use. For those who do not have their own honey extractor, this provides an invaluable tool to harvest honey without having to invest in expensive equipment. Attendees were encouraged to take advantage of this service, which could be a game-changer for those looking to expand their beekeeping operations and improve their harvesting process.

Impact and Future Outlook:
While 18 participants might seem small compared to the total membership of the Association, the depth of engagement among those who attended the training is a clear indicator of the growing enthusiasm for beekeeping within Garrard County. The hands-on training provided a sense of empowerment, equipping beekeepers with the knowledge they need to make the most out of their honey harvest.

Moreover, the availability of the honey extractor on loan has the potential to increase the participation of local beekeepers, especially those with limited resources. By offering access to high-quality equipment, the Garrard County Beekeepers Association, in partnership with the University of Kentucky Extension, is helping to ensure that the local community can sustain and expand their beekeeping endeavors.

The growth in both membership and participation in events like this training session indicates a promising future for the Association and for the region’s beekeeping community. As more beekeepers take advantage of these training opportunities and resources, we anticipate further collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and sustainable practices that will benefit not only local honey production but also the health of the area’s pollinator populations.

In summary, the success of this event and the Association’s ability to harness social media to engage members showcases how the combination of hands-on education, community support, and access to resources can lead to a stronger, more resilient beekeeping community in Garrard County. With these tools in place, the future of local beekeeping is bright and buzzing with potential!
