Success StoryTaylor County Master Gardener Plant Sale

Taylor County Master Gardener Plant Sale

Author: Kara Back-Campbell

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Commercial

Plan of Work: Commercial and Homeowner Horticulture Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Taylor County has not had a plant swap or sale for five years. For the past three years there have been requests to have the sale started back. The initial plant swap had to be discontinued due to Covid-19, lack of interest, and lack of plants the garden club was able to provide to sell.

The Horticulture agent along with two master gardeners and the vendor coordinator from a large local plant sale met to discuss how to attract vendors besides just the Master Gardeners. Other Taylor County Master Gardeners assisted during the plant sale day with set up, taking donations, and take down.

The first Master Gardener plant sale resulted in nine vendors and approximately 300 customers. More advertisement was suggested to increase customer count. When asked if the vendors would be interested in returning all said yes. All proceeds from the plant sale went to the newly established Taylor County Master Gardener Scholarship fund. Over four hundred dollars was received into the fund.

One customer's statement has summarized the impact of this plant sale. "Thank you for having this plant sale! I just live down the street and I don't have a car. I am so happy I can buy plants!"

A vendor has this statement on how it improved his late season sales. "We sold half of what we brought. I would like to set up again, because unlike the auction, I can price my flowers at the price I want and the customers will pay that price."
