Bath County 4-H Dairy Day 2025
Author: Amber Dotson
Planning Unit: Bath County CES
Major Program: Agriculture
Plan of Work: Leadership Enhancement and Community Development
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Providing youth life skill training opportunities and strengthening/supporting the local food and agriculture industry have been identified as top 10 priorities in Bath County. Increasing knowledge and interest in agriculture provides opportunity for future career and consumer decision making in both youth and adults.
In contribution to agriculture education, Bath County 4-H partnered with Bath County Memorial Library to host a visit from the Southwest/Southland Dairy Farmers Mobile Dairy Unit. The Southwest/Southland Mobile Dairy Unit provides presentations about dairy that include a live cow milking, trained instructor, and printed educational materials. The Mobile Dairy Unit visited the Bath County Cooperative Extension Service Office for four sessions: two for county elementary schools, one for homeschool students, and one for the general public.
Over the course of the day-long program, over 300 Bath County youth and adults participated. This program encouraged community by including partnerships with local businesses and media outlets, elementary schools, homeschool cooperatives, Bath County Memorial Library, and the Bath County High School FFA Chapter. Adult participants of the 2025 Dairy Day event noted several outcomes. Of the respondents, 100% indicated that the students in their care learned something new about dairy cattle and dairy products. All adult respondents also indicated that they would encourage youth attendance at future Cooperative Extension Service educational opportunities. By exposing youth to agriculture, Bath County 4-H is sparking interest in agriculture and working to develop future generations of agriculturally aware citizens.
