Author: Hazel Jackson

Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES

Major Program: Mental Health and Well-being - FCS

Plan of Work: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2024 a needs assessment conducted by the University of Kentucky revealed that many people across our state are looking for ways to improve their mental health and overall well-being.   To address the need for women to have activities that relieve stress, the Wilderness Trail Area FCS agents from the 8 counties (Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle, and Whitley) hosted a needlework seminar.   Each of the beginner level classes offered handwork to relieve stress and express creativity.  Leaders and agents taught workshops on crochet, cross stitch, diamond art, quilting, english paper piecing, red work and embroidery.

42 women from ages 28 to 80 participated in hands-on classes.  A written evaluation resulted in:

95% of individuals stated that by taking the class, they learned techniques to relieve stress.

90% reported that by taking the workshops, they found a new way to express their creativity.

100% communicated that after today's classes, their skill level had improved.

One participant commented, I an glad that I took this class.  I learned new and easier methods for needlework.
