In Hart County, many youth have limited access to structured enrichment programs that [promote team work, problem-solving, and critical thinking unless they participate in sports. The LEGO Club was created to meet these needs by offering a space for youth to explore STEM, design, and leadership through hands-on, collaborative learning
The Hart County 4-H Agent partnered with two new volunteers and the public library to launch a LEGO Club and Cloverbud LEGO Club for the 2024- 2025 program year. The agent worked with the volunteers to create lessons that promoted teamwork, communication, problem solving and creativity.
For example, in one team-building activity, youth worked in groups to replicate a hidden LEGO structure. One member at a time observed the model for one minute and returned to their team to describe it—focusing on memory, communication, and attention to detail. Other lessons encouraged open-ended building based on prompts like, “You’re stranded on a desert island—build what you need to survive,” promoting innovation and imagination.
Over 30 youth were engaged in the program in its first year, with several participating in both the club and other 4-H activities. The library displayed the creations between meetings which also increase an interest in the club. Youth in the LEGO Club completed a verbal survey and 100% indicated that they felt confident working in a team and felt they had improved their communication skills. The LEGO Club has become a vibrant, inclusive space where youth build more than LEGO structures—they build confidence, friendships, and essential life skills.
