Mental health challenges among youth are an increasing concern in Kentucky and across the nation. According to the Kentucky Department of Education, 16% of youth struggle with depression and anxiety, and 17% of high school students have reported having thoughts of suicide. Recognizing the urgency of these issues, both the 4-H Council and the County Extension Council identified youth mental health as a critical area of focus.
In response, Clay County Extension partnered with Clay County Public Schools to deliver mental health education sessions in 4th through 6th grade classrooms. A total of 225 students participated in these sessions, which aimed to increase awareness and build essential coping skills.
During the program, students learned how to identify and distinguish between anxiety, worry, and depression. They were taught practical strategies for managing these feelings, including guided breathing and stretching exercises designed to promote emotional regulation. The sessions also highlighted the role of nutrition in mental wellness. To reinforce this concept, students took part in a healthy eating demonstration, sampling a nutritious smoothie and receiving the recipe to take home.
The program concluded with remarkable outcomes:
100% of students demonstrated the ability to distinguish between stress, anxiety, and depression.
98% reported increased knowledge of how to respond to mental health concerns.
95% indicated they plan to adopt self-care strategies to support their mental health and overall wellbeing.
