Public speaking was identified as a significant area of need by both the Clay County Extension Council and 4-H Council members. This concern was echoed by students across various classrooms, who expressed that public speaking felt intimidating and uncomfortable.
As part of Clay County’s commitment to preparing youth with essential life skills, a collaborative program was launched to address this challenge. In partnership with local schools, teachers, and parents, Clay County 4-H created an opportunity for students to participate in the annual 4-H Speech and Demonstration Contest.
In preparation, classrooms across the county received targeted lessons focusing on the importance of public speaking, topic selection, and research skills. Students dedicated considerable time to crafting and refining their speeches and demonstrations.
The effort culminated in sixteen students presenting at the local contest. From there, eight students advanced to the 4-H District Communications Day Contest, and eight of those went on to compete at the 4-H State Communications Day Event.
The results of this initiative were overwhelmingly positive:
100% of participants reported increased confidence when speaking in front of peers.
100% gained skills in writing and presenting a speech or demonstration.
95% reported overall improvement in their public speaking abilities.
This program highlights Clay County’s dedication to equipping youth with the tools they need for lifelong success and demonstrates the power of community collaboration in fostering personal development.
