Healthy, Wealthy and Wise

Author: Jordan Crain

Planning Unit: Barren County CES

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Family and Individual Well-Being Across the Lifespan

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In response to requests, the Barren County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Barren County Homemaker President and Barren County Homemaker Management and Safety Chair collaborated to offer Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. This program was open to Homemakers as well as members of the Community. During planning, it was decided to host an afternoon workshop and have guest speakers talk about Scams, Health Information Cards and First Aid Kits. Lunch was served, including the Calendar recipe from the Food and Nutrition calendar for April. We were able to partner with a local bank and the Glasgow Police Department. The bank had representatives from their security department to present information on scams and how to avoid falling victim to trending scams. A police officer from Glasgow Police Department joined us and shared information on local scams and also shared way for us to stay safe when at home and out in the community. After our guest presenters, FCS Agent, Jordan, shared information from the University of Kentucky on Health Information Cards and reviewed the importance of these cards, who could benefit from them and where to keep them. At the end of the program, Homemaker Members had a station for participants to make First Aid kits to take home with them. Twenty-one individuals took advantage of this informational event. Of those participants, one hundred percent indicated that they had learned something from the Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Workshop. One participant shared "I receive spam calls almost daily. This is very helpful" another shared "I didn't realize how helpful and EHI card could be". Additionally, one hundred percent of those attending indicated at the beginning of the Health Information Card presentation that they did not have EHI cards. At the end, all those attending filled out their cards and took additional cards to  share with family and friends.
