Success StoryEstablishing a Home-Based Baking Business: 2T's Sweet Tooth

Establishing a Home-Based Baking Business: 2T's Sweet Tooth

Author: Lynsey Crumbie

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Economic and Business Development - CED

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In many urban communities, individuals possess valuable talents and entrepreneurial aspirations but often lack the resources and guidance to formalize their businesses. Jackie Branham, an aspiring entrepreneur with a passion for baking, faced uncertainty about how to transition her hobby into a legitimate enterprise. In response, Kentucky State University’s Community Resource Development State Specialist in Entrepreneurship, Lynsey Crumbie, provided individualized coaching and technical assistance to support Branham’s journey. Through one-on-one consultations, Crumbie and Branham developed a SMART 4-week action plan to structure the business launch. As a result, Branham established “2T’s Sweet Tooth,” a Limited Liability Company (LLC), and successfully applied for a Kentucky Home-Based Processing Certificate, along with necessary local occupational licenses.

Key state and local resources from the Kentucky Department for Public Health Food Safety Branch, the Kentucky Secretary of State, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Small Business Development Center were introduced throughout the process to ensure legal compliance and build foundational business knowledge. Technical assistance included product development, packaging and labeling; technology solutions for business marketing, point of sale and recordkeeping; established a pricing strategy; education on food safety laws and best practices; business financial management best practices; and designed an efficient supplies management and storage system that adheres to food safety requirements.

Branham reported that prior to working with Extension, she felt overwhelmed and uncertain about where to begin. After engaging with KSU, her confidence and entrepreneurial competencies significantly improved. Reflecting on her experience, she shared: “[Crumbie] has taught me so much. There is a lot that you don’t know until you do, and by setting goals up front, I was able to prioritize what I needed to get my business off the ground for my first event.” This success story illustrates Extension’s ability to provide practical, client-centered support that transforms individual talent into viable economic ventures. Branham’s business launch also inspired several friends and family members to explore entrepreneurship, showcasing the ripple effect of empowering local entrepreneurs through Extension programming.
