Describe the Issue or Situation.
Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence among older adults. In rural communities, factors such as limited access to preventive health programs, chronic illness, and social isolation further increase fall risk. Many older adults and their families are unaware of the simple steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of falls through education, exercise, and home modifications.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
To address this issue, a Bingocize program was implemented to engage older adults in fun, interactive sessions combining bingo with evidence-based exercises and fall prevention education. The program is designed to improve balance, strength, and knowledge of fall risks, while also fostering social connection. Sessions were offered weekly, and included physical activity, fall prevention tips, and opportunities for group discussion and support.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
The program served four female participants between the ages of 67 and 78. Two participants lived alone, and all four reported having between two and four chronic illnesses. Two participants reported physical limitations, and three reported engaging in moderate activity for at least 20 minutes, five days per week. Fruit consumption was moderate, with participants eating fruit three to four times per week. Three of the four participants attended over half of the program sessions, meeting the engagement threshold for program impact.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
Evaluation data collected at the end of the program showed significant positive outcomes for participants. All four participants reported increased positive feelings, social support, physical strength, and confidence in discussing fall-related concerns with healthcare providers and family members. Additionally, all participants indicated they had learned new strategies to prevent falls and reported increased physical activity levels.
Because of their participation in Bingocize:
3 participants had their vision checked.
4 participants had their healthcare provider review their medications.
4 participants made modifications to their homes to reduce fall risks.
1 participant discussed fall prevention with family.
3 participants reported increased activity levels.
All four participants expressed satisfaction with the program and stated they would recommend Bingocize to a friend or family member. This program not only improved participants’ physical health but also increased their confidence, social engagement, and proactive steps toward fall prevention—demonstrating its value as a practical and engaging approach to improving the well-being of older adults.
