Outcome: Initial Outcome
The 2024 Kids Count County Data Dashboard revealed that 20.9% of expectant Clinton County mothers report smoking during pregnancy; 7.1% of pregnancies result in low birthweight babies; and the community has a 24.2% teen birth rate.
The Clinton County Cooperative Extension Service sponsored a Community Baby Shower for 47 pregnant women and parents of infants up to age three months. The goal of the Community Baby Shower was to provide information to families on child health and developmental needs while connecting families to appropriate services. Participants interacted with guest speakers on topics such as safe sleep, impact of maternal smoking and vaping, healthy pregnancy, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children (WIC), and breastfeeding.
Additionally, 13 vendors ranging from speech therapy, insurance and managed care, adult education, Kentucky Health Access Nurturing Development Services (HANDS), mental health resources, and more shared information with participants as well.
Evaluation results indicated that participants ranked safe sleep strategies as the most informative educational talk followed by interacting with community resource vendors. Narrative responses to application of things learned revealed the following intentions: “I plan to stop vaping”; “I plan to read materials and get as much information as I can”; “I will not put stuffed animals or blankets in the bassinet with my newborn. I am very grateful for this baby shower program. It has been very informational and engaging.”
