In Bullitt County, there is a growing need to connect youth with the natural environment and promote mindfulness and environmental stewardship. According to local educators and community feedback, many children have limited opportunities for outdoor exploration and lack awareness of local wildlife and habitats. Birding offers a unique, accessible way to engage youth in nature while supporting mental wellbeing and environmental education.

To address this need, the Bullitt County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent partnered with the Bullitt County 4-H Youth Development Agent to deliver a birding education program. The program included visits to three elementary school classrooms and one evening session at the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Office in Bullitt County. Together, the agents developed and led interactive lessons focused on bird identification, habitat awareness, and mindfulness in nature. A hands-on activity—creating birdfeeders using pinecones, Crisco, and birdseed—was used to reinforce learning and encourage continued observation at home. Students got to explore birdwatching by practicing with binoculars purchased through an Anne L. Stamm Avian Education Fund Grant through the Kentucky Ornithological Society awarded to the Bullitt County Cooperative Extension Service in 2023. 

The program reached approximately 60 elementary school students during classroom visits and 15 youth and family members during the evening session. Participants ranged in age from 6 to 12 years old. While demographic data was not formally collected, the program served a diverse group of students from multiple schools across Bullitt County.

Youth gained knowledge about local bird species, bird habitats, and the importance of environmental stewardship. They also learned how to use their senses to observe nature, supporting mindfulness and focus. Many students expressed excitement about watching birds at home and sharing what they learned with family members. 

By fostering early interest in birding and environmental awareness, this program contributes to a broader goal of cultivating environmentally responsible citizens. Continued engagement in nature-based activities can support mental well-being, encourage outdoor physical activity, and promote lifelong environmental stewardship.
