Wit’s Workout is a brain health resource tool developed to assist leaders who provide programming to older adults in community settings. Wit’s Workout has two main goals – to provide purposeful opportunities for older adults to engage intellectually, and to increase their socialization through ongoing group participation.
The Daviess County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent collaborated with the Owensboro Public Library to provide an eight-week series of Wit’s Workout. Initially twelve adults signed up for the program and participated halfway through. Finishing the program were six who attended all sessions.
The group participated in activities and discussions about memory, brain health and overall wellbeing. Some of the topics included forgetfulness contributors, intellectual challenge, exercise, diet, sleep, stress management, socialization, sensory memory, long-term memory, focus and attention.
Each session began with an ice breaker of introducing themselves and answering a question. Over the course of the eight weeks all the members knew each other’s name and something about them which helped them feel comfortable in the group. Some comments from the group were:
Great Class!
Fun and stimulating!
I am not good at physical exercise, but I have enjoyed the metal exercises.
This class was amazing! The weekly units, meeting new people were great.
Thank you to the library, the extension office and leaders of the class.
We laughed a lot!
Most disappointing was brain-lock on certain topics and puzzles. It was good to wake up the sleepy cells. Looking forward to the next class.
