Eating For the Health of It

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kentucky has the fifth-highest rate of obesity in the nation.  In Boone County, 31% of adults are estimated to be obese, having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. The Boone County Nutrition Education Program arranged a series of monthly adult classes for four months at the public library in Florence for 18 participants.  Lessons focused on understanding food labels, identifying added sugars and fats, and experimenting with healthier alternatives. According to  a national computer data system, 100% of the participants showed an improvement in their diet.  The assistant stated the recommendations from the USDA My Plate guidelines and applied the information to creative games and learning activities.  Participants can write meal plans to help manage the amount of added sugars and fat that cause weight gain.  By setting up an exercise schedule of 30 minutes a day, participants can choose between weight bearing activities or cardio to assist in managing their weight.

Kay B., a female participant commented on how much she has learned from the class experience, the written materials provided, and the use of reinforcement items received.  She takes the information home to her elderly husband who is unable to attend with her.  Together they are making lifestyle changes to lose weight and eat for the health benefits.  Kay lives at a low income senior apartment complex where management supports her efforts to grow a small garden to enjoy fresh vegetables and herbs in the summer.  She recommended the Nutrition Education Series to the staff, so the assistant was able to start a brand new series at the complex, reaching an additional 15 limited resource seniors for a winter series.
