Derby Planting Program
Author: Mary Dossett
Planning Unit: McCracken County CES
Major Program: Community Gardens and Horticulture Therapy
Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Several of our horticulture programs are full and we have received complaints on how to address this issue. The horticulture agent came up with a fun program to encourage community members to plant flowers and learn more about the Extension Office. On April 29th, the horticulture agent hosted a Derby Planting Party at the Extension Office. The agent encouraged participants to wear derby hats and bring their friends! There was light refreshments and mocktails to make the event memorable. The horticulture agent and agriculture agent worked together to coordinate kids in the FFA program to come speak on a gardening topic. This was a great collaboration. While the three FFA students spoke on a gardening topic, the participants planted flowers. The outcome is initial but the agents look for this to be a yearly event that community members can look forward to for years to come.
