Success StoryAgricultural Appreciation Dinner

Agricultural Appreciation Dinner

Author: Meredith Hall

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Matters And Healthy Family (Community) through Healthy Individuals

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Boyd County has approximately 187 farms. Of these farms only 87% have internet access. This contributes to the issue of people who are involved in agriculture often feeling isolated with few events to come together with each other and other community leaders and members.

The Ag Appreciation dinner directly combats the problem of poor mental health due to isolation. This dinner offered an education speaker who presented on insect borne diseases of livestock. However the main focus was to bring people together. Local FFA youth were recognized as important contributors to the future of Boyd County Agriculture. New farmers had the opportunity to network with more established farmers. Local 4-H groups made cards that expressed their appreciation of farmers that were presented to attendees. Boyd County Cooperative Extension Service volunteers worked together with agents to implement the dinner.

The target audience was families, individuals- youth adult and senior, community leaders and farmers. We had 138 participants.

As a result of this dinner 138 Boyd County community members and agricultural producers were more connected to each other and able to see how valued they are. This event improved connectedness and the mental wellbeing of attendees through fellowship and by highlighting how valuable Boyd County farmers are to our community.
