Rockcastle County 4-H, in partnership with Rockcastle County Schools, recently offered a one-of-a-kind educational experience for 5th grade gifted and talented students. The program culminated in an overnight adventure at J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp, where students were immersed in hands-on environmental learning and unforgettable nature-based experiences.
Throughout the trip, students explored a variety of engaging science activities, including owl pellet dissection, tree identification, and a pond study that brought local ecosystems to life. These interactive lessons not only sparked curiosity but also helped students develop a deeper understanding of Kentucky’s natural environment.
One of the highlights of the experience was a special presentation from the Kentucky Reptile Zoo. Students were captivated as they learned about reptiles native to the region and the important work the zoo does in research and conservation. This unique opportunity gave students a chance to see live animals up close and hear directly from experts in the field.
As the sun set, students laced up their hiking boots for a night hike through the woods. Under the stars, they tuned into the sounds of the night, hoping to catch the call of an owl. This peaceful and awe-inspiring moment allowed students to connect with nature in a meaningful way, rounding out a trip full of exploration, education, and wonder.
Thanks to the strong partnership between Rockcastle County 4-H and the school district, this program provided a powerful, immersive experience that students will carry with them for years to come. It’s just one example of how collaboration can bring classroom learning to life and ignite a lifelong love of science and nature.
