By engaging in this exercise, students gain valuable insights into budgeting, saving, and managing debt, preparing them for the financial realities of adult life.
According to BluePrint Kentucky's County Data Profiles, Clinton County's population in poverty rate is at 22% which is considerably higher than the Kentucky state average of 17% and national rate of 12%. Reality Town helps put into perspective how vital it is to prepare for a solid financial future at an early age in order to prevent increases in poverty.
Before the 89, 8th grade, students entered Reality Town, they were able to choose their own career and receive a monthly wage. The students then traveled to 18 booths, including housing, property taxes, transportation, insurance, clothing, entertainment, vices, etc. Community business leaders, organizations, and 28 4-H Adventure Club teen leaders managed the booths to help the youth budget their finances. Students quickly realized the impact of life's decisions upon financial security.
According to the post evaluation report, 98% of students reported having a greater financial understanding of budgeting their financial choices based on their future income wages and family dynamics after participating in Reality Town. While 100% of students gained familiarity with new resources within their community and financial costs for the necessities that they provide. Students reported that the experience was very beneficial for overall future planning.
