Describe the Issue or Situation.
According to 2025 County Health Rankings, Clinton County is faring slightly worse than the average county in Kentucky for population health and well-being.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
To continue the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors, Clinton County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and Nutrition Education Assistant collaborated with the Clinton County School District to offer the Recipes for Life program.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
115 students participated along with eight administrators and teachers; 14 volunteers worked with students in a hands-on educational setting to teach important life skills.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
A pre-test/post-test evaluation was conducted to determine learning outcomes.
Significant changes were noted in student knowledge and behavioral intentions: 40% increased knowledge of proper handwashing techniques, food safety, use of meat thermometers, and how to tell when meat is fully cooked; 44% increased knowledge of proper knife skills; 80% of students plan to eat more fruits and vegetables; 82% of students reported that they plan to try new foods; 86% plan to help prepare food at home; and 83% of students feel confident making their own meal.
Cooking with youth is a great way to help them build confidence and lay the foundation for healthier eating habits as they age. Programs such as Recipes for Life are an integral part of Extension’s commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.
