The Carlisle County Cooperative Extension Service, in collaboration with the Agency for Substance Abuse Policy (ASAP), has been hosting the "Truth and Consequences" program to address the growing issue of substance abuse in communities. Local data highlights concerning trends, including cigarette smoking, smokeless tobacco, alcohol consumption, marijuana, and other drug use. In Carlisle County, 4.8% of adults report drinking alcohol, and 14.5% are smokers. Additionally, the teen birth rate stands at 43 per 1,000, and 8.8% of children are without health insurance.

"Truth and Consequences" aims to guide youth toward better decision-making. This year, the event was held at Carlisle County Middle School and focused on 8th-grade students. Participants were presented with real-life scenarios—such as drinking at a party or misusing prescription drugs—and then visited booths that demonstrated the possible consequences of those choices. They also watched an educational video and heard from speakers who shared personal stories of recovery from substance abuse.

To organize the event, a community planning committee—led by the county extension agents—brought together 20 dedicated volunteers. These included the district judge, law enforcement officers, social workers, nurses, and emergency management personnel. Held in March, the program reached 52 eighth-grade students. Parents were invited to attend the three-hour event alongside their children. Despite being held during work hours, many parents made it a priority to participate. They attended an orientation session before accompanying their children through the activities.

The planning committee unanimously agrees that "Truth and Consequences" is a valuable initiative that should be held annually.
