Author: Lorin Fawns

Planning Unit: Mason County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Horticulture

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Buffalo Trace Homesteading Series is a hands-on educational initiative to empower community members with sustainable agriculture skills. The program focuses on practical techniques in food preservation, gardening, mushroom cultivation, and meat processing. Designed to promote self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship, the series provides participants with the knowledge and confidence to apply these practices in their own homes and farms. With over 75 participants from diverse backgrounds, the program has fostered a stronger sense of community and a deeper connection to local food production. Post-program evaluations indicate high satisfaction, with 100% of participants learning something new and 90% strongly agreeing that the topics covered were both informative and relevant, which will help me on my farm. The program has led to tangible changes in participants' practices, from adopting farming methods to reducing food waste and enhancing self-sufficiency. The Buffalo Trace Homesteading Series continues to inspire sustainable living with lasting impacts on both the individuals involved and the broader community.
